It wasn't until I was helping my morning kindergartners board the bus on September 11, 2001, that I heard the tragic and alarming news from another kindergarten teacher about the national crisis that was occurring. Waving goodbye to the smiling students while listening to my colleague describe the attacks left me in a state of dreamlike dissonance. The beautiful late summer morning was instantly transformed from a day themed around "The Three Bears" into a day of uncertainty and grief. With the rhythms of "Pease Porridge Hot" still echoing in my mind, I quickly joined the rest of the teachers in the staff lounge and saw my first video images of the toppling towers. I had lived through the assassinations of the 1960s, had been a student at Kent State University on a fateful day in May of 1970, and had observed the televised deaths of the space shuttle team of astronauts that included a teacher. Yet the day in September 2001 was even more emotionally devastating. Conversations for a Crisis: Child-Initiated
